Urgent Nationwide Recall: Bobtail, Canine Cuisine, Ultra Pet, and More Pulled From Shelves

RCL Foods has initiated a nationwide recall of several popular dry pet food product lines manufactured at one of its facilities. The urgent recall comes after the company discovered that potentially contaminated products, which had been condemned and marked for destruction, had made their way into both the informal and formal retail markets.

Which Brands Are Affected?

RCL Foods has confirmed that limited batches of the following brands are included in the recall:

  • Bobtail

  • Bonzo

  • Catmor

  • Canine Cuisine

  • Feline Cuisine

  • Optimizor

  • Ultra Pet Dog

(Note: Consumers are urged to check the specific batch identification dates provided by RCL Foods to see if their products are affected).

How Did This Happen?

The recall follows a recent incident where condemned dry pet food, sent to a waste management facility in eastern Gauteng for destruction, was stolen and subsequently resold on the informal market.

Following this theft, RCL Foods instituted further internal checks and made a troubling discovery: preliminary assessments indicate that some of the condemned products were also erroneously released into the formal retail trade. Independent experts have been appointed to investigate exactly how this logistical failure occurred.

RCL Foods is currently working closely with retailers, regulators, and relevant authorities to trace and remove all affected products from circulation.

“On behalf of RCL Foods, I want to apologise to all affected shoppers. Our primary concern is the health and well-being of shoppers and their pets,” said RCL Foods Chief Executive Officer, Paul Cruickshank. “Our immediate priority is to recall, remove, and replace all potentially affected products from circulation. We did not meet our own standards. This is not what our customers expect from RCL Foods. We are taking every step necessary to rectify the situation.”

What You Should Do

If you have purchased any of the affected pet food brands, do not feed them to your pets.

  • Check the Batch: Verify the expiry dates and batch codes against the official recall list.

  • Return the Product: Take the affected pet food back to the retailer where you purchased it for a full refund or a replacement (subject to stock availability).
