Woolworths opens Wynberg dark store to boost Woolies Dash in Cape Town Southern Suburbs

Woolworths has officially opened its latest online fulfilment centre, commonly known as a “dark store”, in Wynberg, Cape Town, marking another step in the expansion and enhancement of its fast-growing, on-demand delivery service, Woolies Dash.

The new Wynberg facility is designed to significantly improve the speed, reliability and product availability of Woolies Dash for customers across the Southern Suburbs, strengthening Woolworths’ ability to meet increasing demand for convenient shopping with rapid delivery.

Strengthening online fulfilment in a high-demand node

Wynberg was selected as the site for the latest dark store due to its strategic position within the local catchment area, allowing it to serve a growing base of online customers more efficiently.

The location will help Woolworths better service those digital shoppers whose orders are currently fulfilled from surrounding stores, while also easing pressure on those stores to improve the overall experience for walk-in customers. The addition demonstrates the retailer’s continued focus on placing fulfilment capacity closer to areas where online demand continues to increase.

Building on the success of Woolies Dash growth

The new dark store reflects the continued expansion of Woolies Dash as a core pillar of Woolworths’ e-commerce strategy, as customers increasingly turn to fast, reliable online grocery delivery. Building on the success of Woolworths’ Cape Town CBD dark store, the Wynberg facility extends the dedicated fulfilment model beyond the city centre, with learnings from the CBD site informing improvements in operational capacity, efficiency and customer reach across the region.

“Our online channels continue to experience strong growth, with Woolies Dash playing a central role in driving this momentum,” says Bradley Nitsckie, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Woolworths. “As more customers choose online grocery shopping, we are focused on strengthening our fulfilment network to deliver the speed, availability and convenience they expect.”

The new facility is expected to enhance the Woolies Dash customer experience through a broader online range, improved access to delivery slots and greater consistency during peak trading periods, with a continued focus on reliability and order accuracy.

Supporting future growth

The Wynberg opening forms part of Woolworths’ broader national expansion strategy for its online fulfilment network, with additional dark stores planned across South Africa as demand for e-commerce continues to grow. The facility will also create dedicated operational roles, supporting local employment and contributing to the development of new skills within the online fulfilment sector.

“As customer shopping habits continue to evolve, we remain focused on investing in the infrastructure and capabilities needed to deliver a seamless experience. The Wynberg dark store represents another important milestone in our journey to bring Woolies Dash closer to more customers, giving them faster, more reliable access to the products they love, whenever and wherever they need them,” concludes Nitsckie.
