Birkenstock Steps Into Limpopo and Unveils Eco-Friendly Store Design

Following the successful launch of its Rosebank store in late 2025, Birkenstock is rapidly accelerating its South African expansion. The iconic footwear brand has officially opened two new retail spaces: a milestone debut at Mall of the North in Polokwane and its largest South African store to date at Fourways Mall in Johannesburg.

Both locations showcase the brand’s ongoing growth strategy and feature its brand-new "classic store concept" design.

A Milestone Debut in Limpopo

The Mall of the North location marks Birkenstock’s first-ever physical footprint in the Limpopo province. This strategic expansion introduces the brand’s design heritage, quality craftsmanship, and iconic style to a brand-new demographic, strengthening its market position across the country.

In addition to being a provincial first, the 65.4m² Polokwane space serves as the South African debut for Birkenstock's new classic store concept, which blends storytelling with material-inspired design for a truly immersive shopping experience.

Sustainable, Material-Driven Design

Designed with sustainability and contemporary retail trends in mind, the new store concept heavily incorporates the core materials found in Birkenstock footwear. Highlights of the new design include:

  • Eco-Friendly Finishes: The front window features striking cork pedestals, while the interior is finished with locally sourced terrazzo-inspired flooring and natural jute carpets.

  • Modern Displays: Traditional wooden shelving has been replaced with sleek LED black metal racks and fluted glass surfaces, perfectly complemented by floating display tables made from wood, glass, and black melamine.

  • Signature Branding: The brand’s identity is brought to life through an LED footbed wall finished in layered Corten steel. Additionally, the point-of-sale desk features a brand wall showcasing the signature "bone pattern" found on the soles of all Birkenstock shoes.

As the brand continues its rapid local expansion, customers can look forward to greater access to footwear defined by more than two and a half centuries of expertise. Rooted in tradition yet ever-evolving, Birkenstock remains as culturally relevant today as it has throughout its history.
